Freedom from Phobias
My Phobia Journey
When I was a 5 -years -old, lagging behind from my family in a shopping centre I fell on an escalator. This may not seem so traumatic, except that I was wearing a thick green woolen skirt and when I fell, the steps caught a thread. The fabric began to be pulled into the machine. As a child, unable to fully understand how escalators worked and seeing too many movies where bad guys get thrown into machinery, I began to panic.
My parents hadn’t turned around, hadn’t realised I had fallen. My skirt was at the mercy of this huge machine. I came to the only rational conclusion a 5-year-old could. As soon as the skirt was gone…. I was next.
As I contemplated the gruesome end of my time of Earth, my mother finally turned around, understandably panicked to see her child trapped in an escalator and came to my rescue.
A Phobia Begins
After recounting this story some 16 years later to some friends, I began suffering from an escalator phobia. For a period of about 18 months, no thing or no-one could persuade me to take a step on one. I’d shiver at the site of them.
At 21 years old, of course I knew the escalator wasn’t going to drag me in and the worse that would happen was bruised shins or an emergency stop over-ride would kick in, yet I just couldn’t seem to shift this extreme reaction.
I remember so vividly standing on top of the escalators so many times in Liverpool’s shopping centers: sweating, shaking, going to the edge and withdrawing so many times that you’d think I was on the edge of a Olympian diving board not heading into John Lewis’ kitchen department!
In my case, my phobia mostly caused me to use the stairs unlike some phobias that can massively effect people’s lives and happiness, but I do know what it feels like when well-meaning friends tried to push me into facing my fear or the embarrassment at being ridiculed.
This is what phobias can do to us. Perhaps you can empathise or know somebody who can?
Finding a Solution
As you can see from my own story, phobias are generally due to incidents that happened as a child that the subconscious mind has labelled as ‘dangerous’ and continued aversion behavior (far, sweating, shaking, anxiety) into later life.
This natural phenomenon is very useful when it comes to sensible threats such as checking the road before crossing or not handling a hot plate, but can be very frustrating when the brain learns these patterns around harmless things.
Perhaps you remember what started it, or perhaps the event is long forgotten. In either case phobias can be undone.
Hypnosis is the perfect tool for getting in touch with that deeper part of us and helping it to understand that it may have understood things in a way that’s not quite right.
In my example, I genuinely believed machines ‘sucked people in’. If that were true then my subconscious would be quite right in avoiding them forever. The problem was caused by an untrue belief my mind had incorrectly accepted. Many phobias begin in such a way.
Using inner-child techniques, regression and suggestion therapy the subconscious is asked to re-evaluate the problem with adult eyes and often this alone will cause a shift.
Conscious work such as thinking, calming and energy shifting strategies will help you consciously prepare yourself for the possibility of encountering your fear which often loses it’s strength when explored in sessions.
Successful Brain Re-framing
I have worked successfully of fear of birds, flying, agoraphobia, germs, water, sickness, skiing, driving and many more including of course escalators - which you’ll be glad to know I am completely confident in using these days.
